Cold Data

With a lot of databases being moved to the cloud, you need to think about the cost of storage. With differing tiers being available with differing costs, how can you make the most efficient use of your spend.

Do you have infrequently used databases or archive databases that could happily reside on slower, cheaper storage? Or on your large databases do you have partitions or filegroups that don't need the performance of high cost storage? This data is effectively cold data - it doesn't change and is rarely queried.

When you start counting the costs of 100's of TBs of cloud storage, you could save money by having your cold data on cheaper storage.
